Edited Dec. 28, 2014: Barnacle Tide has been removed and is now only an excerpt. The entire Siren Song novella will be available in January 2015.

Barnacle Tide has been published. It’s the fourth installment of Siren Song, a story featuring a M/M pair in a fantasy world. It is about 8500 words long and is preceded by Like Dark Algae, Bright Storm and Run Aground.

Normally I wouldn’t publish something quite so long in one go, but I didn’t want to break up this story any more than I already have. It was actually going to be even longer on the first draft, but I rearranged a few things and kicked a plot point to later on to keep sections less cumbersome.

As to the story itself, I wanted Rikel’s family to have a real part in it ever since I came back to writing more about him. I thought it was a little inevitable given his motivations in the story I published back in February. But more characters means more relationships and that means either more words overall or less words for the MC and love interest to interact. I tried to keep a balance in the overall story so Caarafk still has half a chance at becoming a real person in my readers’ eyes but doesn’t monopolize Rikel’s time too completely (despite monopolizing his thoughts).

Next Sunday, Dec 14th: One Last Song (Siren Song 5) – When the song fades for a final time, there might be nothing left to salvage.

When Mother was gone, Wela turned to Rikel, though she still didn’t look at him, preferring to stare over his shoulder where a neighbor’s cows were meandering downhill. “Your siren started this?”

“No,” said Rikel. He glared at her, gesturing to the sea though only the horizon was visible from this angle. “He saved my life. Saved Narin and the others too. He wasn’t responsible for this.”

“Do you hear yourself, Rikel? You’re making him into some sort of hero. How do you know he wasn’t responsible? How do you know he didn’t organize it all?”

“Because he wasn’t there. I was under the hull when it happened. I was right there and he wasn’t with them.”

“Narin said there was at least two dozen. You’re telling me that in the chaos of that fight you might not have missed him?”

“I wouldn’t have missed him! Others, maybe, but I’d know him anywhere.”

Wela’s jaw tightened. “You’re listening to this, right? We need to get you help before you kill yourself. Or worse, kill another shipful of people.”

Rikel recoiled. “I didn’t do this. I fought them, Wela. It wasn’t until later that Caarafk showed up—”

“He has a name?”

“They all probably have names.”

“But you know his name.”

Edited Dec. 28, 2014: Run Aground has been removed and is now only an excerpt. The entire Siren Song novella will be available in January 2015.

Run Aground has been published. It’s the third installment of Siren Song, a story featuring a M/M pair, and is about 6900 words long. Previous stories are Like Dark Algae and Bright Storm.

This piece is far more erotic than the last, mostly out of necessity, though I had to be careful. Part of the problem with writing this story was the issue of consent because of the naturally occurring ability I gave the sirens that incites uncontrollable lust. To even out the issue, instead of making the siren in the story unaware or uncaring about the problem, I made him a victim as well as someone who can’t stop the way his voice affects Rikel.

And that’s about all I want to say because this part is really the middle of the story.

Next Sunday, Dec 7th: Barnacle Tide (Siren Song 4) – Temptation is never far away, sticking like barnacles to his mind and body.

Rikel started to say something about infection when something moved out of the corner of his eye. He turned in time to see Caarafk fold his arms across the bottom of the rock, the deep blue splatters on his scaled body more obvious now in the evening grayness than they’d been in the dead of night. His kelp-like hair, splayed and pressed against his triceps, ranged from sandy shades to dark forest greens. No black, as Rikel had thought. His scales held a hint of black, a smoky color mixing with his ocean blue splotches.

“Fuck,” whispered Sarson.

“She did a number on your boat,” said Caarafk without preamble.

Rikel moaned, the ever-present longing he’d been suffering becoming a tidal wave of need. He leaned toward Caarafk, wanting those arms around him again, wanting that mouth slanted over his, wanting so much his cock stiffened in his skintight suit.

“Rikel! No!” Sarson grabbed his arms, but Rikel grappled with him, pulling away when Sarson grunted in pain. “Shit, stop!” Then his voice lifted. “Narin! Narin get over here now!”

That only made Rikel move faster, scrambling over the rock as the siren continued speaking.

“She gets like that when she’s angry. There’s no reasoning with her. Not really.” He paused then, his eyes sparkling, then he began a soft, wordless song that didn’t allow Rikel a moment to think about anything but throwing himself into Caarafk’s arms and sucking down siren cock until he couldn’t breathe.

“Narin! There’s a siren taking Rikel! Fuck, Narin!”

Rikel was aware of Sarson dragging his body across the rock in a vain attempt to save him. Save him. How laughable. He didn’t need saving. He didn’t need anyone except Caarafk.

His cock tingled with excitement and his blood sang with happiness as Caarafk’s soft humming continued to fuel his desire. He slipped against the edge of the water and when Caarafk extended a hand, the thin webbing between his fingers blatant in the gray of the oncoming night, Rikel didn’t hesitate. He reached out eagerly and clutched at Caarafk, ignoring Sarson’s pleading behind him as Caarafk sank below the surface, dragging Rikel with him.

DARK PHOENIX has been published. A 25k word novella; gay paranormal/fantasy romance.

 Amazon | B&N | Kobo | Inktera | Scribd

Small Excerpts can be found here.

He’s spent his life in the water, never wanting to fly. Until now.

Landon’s life is simple, predictable and filled with plenty of waves to ride and bare-chested men to bring home. He doesn’t want complicated any more than he wants his neighbors stealing his stash. But when a strange man beats him to his apartment door one sunny afternoon, he discovers that sharks are not the only predators lurking beneath the ocean waves.

Along with that disturbing discovery, Landon finds himself a target for a dangerous dark phoenix named Jak, whose attention forces Landon to reevaluate whether complicated might not be so bad. Yet, every time things begin to heat up between them, Jak’s confusing disappearances make Landon want to forget ever having met the phoenix. And when Jak’s true intentions are finally revealed, the violent fallout threatens to tear them apart permanently.

Warning: This novella features beach muscles, an arrogant shape shifter and plenty of man on man action.

Edited Dec. 28, 2014: Bright Storm has been removed and is now only an excerpt. The entire Siren Song novella will be available in January 2015.

Bright Storm has been published. It is 6800 words, featuring a M/M pair and is the second in the Siren Song stories.

Back in March I published Like Dark Algae, a story about a man heading into siren territory and subsequently becoming enamored by one of them. It’s been a standalone for that long. A few months ago, probably because I was thinking about the syrens in Dark Phoenix, I came up with a continuing storyline for the characters in Like Dark Algae.

Bright Storm is thus the second piece of Rikel’s story. It mostly deals with the aftermath of the events in Like Dark Algae. Of course, because I had never intended on continuing the story, I hadn’t done anything excessive in the matter of world building, so I had to rectify that when I began working on the subsequent parts. I will probably end up folding some of those details into Like Dark Algae when I gather all the pieces of Siren Song together.

Next Sunday, Nov. 30: Run Aground (Siren Song 3) – There’s always something left to lose.

Wela gave a short laugh. “We thought we were going to find your mangled parts washing up on the north shore, Rikel.” She turned toward him and he had the decency to flinch at the contorted distress on her face. “Don’t do that to us again.” Then she started the long walk back to the house.

The wind gusted and then dipped, low enough Rikel caught the heightened sounds of the sirens’ song and felt an ache tug at his heart. Or maybe his groin. Everything seemed to be directly connected to their song. As if Caarafk had left an echoing layer smeared on the insides of Rikel’s ear canals as a parting gift. An exchange for his hair. Hair that ended up being as useless as his own.

A dull fear pulsed inside Rikel and he spun around. “Wela, wait.”

She paused, twisting just far enough to look at him.

“What if I’m song sick?’

Something flickered across her expression, but it was too dark for Rikel to made out what she must be presuming. Then she shrugged, her dismissal of his fear calming him far more than any platitudes or promises could have. “Then you’ll fight it. Like all good sailors do.”

Sun Kissed has been published. It is a 7400 word short story that is more science fantasy rather than sitting firmly on one side or the other of those genres.

As to the pair featured in this (sweet) romance, the sex of the MC is ambiguous, but the love interest is considered male. I left the story with the ambiguous MC on purpose, though I hadn’t intended on making it that way when I started writing. On my first read-through (I cycle so this occurred when the story was about half-finished) I realized I didn’t have a single instance where I gave any indication of sex. Not a single one. Even the MC’s name–Jari–was a sexless one and stemmed from the unisex name Jerry.

It wasn’t on purpose, but it got me thinking about a situation in a workshop I attended a few years ago…

History documented his landing. Not in so many words, but as a footnote referencing the fiery meteor that streaked across the sky and crashed among the pitted craters toward the northeast of the settlement.

Later stories told of a demon dwelling in the canyon who could burn your flesh right off your body with a single touch. Mothers used the demon of the canyon fable for decades to scare their children into obedience. By the time I was born, the canyon had been renamed, even on our maps.

In my youth, I preferred to be respected and trusted by my elders so no one ever called me a wild child or a rebel. Oh, I had my few forays into the craters, climbed up to drink from the spiral spring and had to run my heart out to escape from the king bull who ruled the dusty fields and rutted all the cows. But those expeditions had been practically expected by my parents and I barely received a glare from my father for getting home late. Never had I strayed into even the slanting edge of the canyon where many others gathered for late-night parties, their daring more out of idiocy rather than courage.

And yet, for all that, I’d never been afraid. It’s hard to fear something you don’t believe exists. Continue reading →

Edited Nov. 25, 2014: Violet Flames has been removed and is now only an excerpt. To read the entire Dark Phoenix novella, you can go to the Books page for retailer links.

The story Violet Flames (Dark Phoenix 5) has been published. It is the 5200 word conclusion to the Dark Phoenix series. Previous stories are Phoenix Fire, Heated Invasion, Searing Betrayal and Gentle Burn.

Just like last week, I can’t say much about this story. What I can tell you was Violet Flames was easier to write than the previous two stories. My assumption on that is that when the end is near, words come faster. It’s a proven fact.

When I first started putting up short stories on my site back in February, I always intended on my long-term plan being to eventually have enough to group them together and publish them independently. Dark Phoenix has the distinction of being the first to undergo this change.

All five stories will remain on my site until Nov. 25th. On that day, I will be removing the complete stories, leaving excerpts up only. I will then be putting them together into a novella and republishing it on distributor platforms for $2.99 a few days later. I wanted to give a heads up so anyone who wants to read the stories for free can do so before they’re pulled.

Just to be clear, Dark Phoenix, when published, will have no new material added. The story will remain practically untouched with the exception of having another couple of rounds of editing done to it.

Next Sunday, Nov. 16: Sun Kissed – So bright it’s hard to stare at him. So shy it’s hard to speak with him. So kind it’s hard to forget him.
