RISE OF THE SNOWMEN
A Deadly Holidays Novel

Dec 15th 2020
(gay romance/fantasy adventure)
55k words
Amazon Link

As is my tradition, here are a few interesting tidbits about working on this novel!

1) This novel was supposed to be a novella. (Angry writer face!) It was supposed to be only around 37k in order to match up with Those Bloody Christmas Elves. But, as you can see, this novel decided it was not satisfied with 37k words. Which, honestly, I’m still not sure why. WHY?!

So there I am, telling everyone I’m working on a novella and they kept saying: “Still?? How long is this novella??”

Me: *mumble, mumble* “almost 55k” *mumble*

2) The character of Mandy was originally modeled after the children collectively in my daughter’s kindergarten class because that’s how old she was when I was writing Those Bloody Christmas Elves. My intention was to age her one year each year so I had a clear research path to knowing exactly how children that age would act.

Whelp, that didn’t work, because here we are nearly three years later and Mandy has only grown one year in that time. If I keep this up, by the time I publish Christmas is Cancelled, my daughter will be in college or something.

3) Like Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land, I wrote this novel in two parts, broken up by a few years. If you can guess exactly where I stopped and then restarted, I’ll give you fake internet points as a reward :) (Hint: I don’t write linearly XD)

4) Perie Wolford, who did the cover for Those Bloody Christmas Elves, has also done the cover for Rise of the Snowmen. He’s absolutely amazing! And I adore how he managed to capture all the different tonal elements of the stories–the actual danger/adventure; the ridiculous Christmas elements that are still portrayed in a serious manner throughout; the characters themselves.

5) I always choose a different notebook for each project. With certain connected stories, that notebook carries through to each of the stories. For my Christmas series with Greg and Taylor I have this floppy, teal notebook that has gold balls across it. I originally chose it because it was greenish and reminded me of ornaments.

It now has the completed outline for Christmas is Cancelled in it, which may or may not be longer than Rise of the Snowmen, given it’s got a planned 17 sections/chapters.

Also, it’s really, really hard to write about snow when it’s summer.

I hope you give Rise of the Snowmen a chance this holiday season! It’s a bit dark; it’s a bit dangerous; but there’s still holiday spirit and Christmas presents and a lovely romance that just keeps figuring itself out!

Song For The Wilds eBook CoverToday’s the day!

Song for the Wilds is now available!

This novel is the conclusion of The Wilds Duology and is a fantasy adventure/gay romance story, heavy on the fantasy with plenty of mayhem and darkness abounding.

Normally I list six interesting facts about the novel being published, however, I already touched on anything remotely interesting for Haunt’s publication post and the things left I want to say could contain spoilers. I’ll save those tidbits for a future post.

For anyone who didn’t know, I have a lot of short free stories available to read on the bottom of The Wilds Duology page if you’re looking for more from the houndmaster world. I have no plans of removing any of them so check them out at your leisure.

Also, I’ve started work on a sequel trilogy! :) It will be featuring two different houndmasters, ruins, a missing sire and a botanist. Plus a trio of mages from Haunt will be taking advantage of their new-found freedom to jump aboard the fresh adventure train!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Since it is the holiday, I’m putting all my novellas on sale for only .99c through Christmas Day. (It might take a few hours for the sale to take effect, but it’ll be live all day the 25th.) If you celebrate, I hope you’re closer to being ready for tomorrow than I am!

The Wilds Duology: Book I
gay romance/adventure fantasy

It’s been a fun month leading up to today and I’ve published a lot of free fiction, but now it’s time for a few non-fiction facts about the book! These are more about the writing-of the novel rather than content :)

1. I wrote the beginning of Haunt back in 2012 and never meant to finish it.

About two days before NaNo that year my plan was to use Nov to finish up another novel I’d been stalled on for a few weeks. In order to jumpstart my creativity and get me back into writing order, I decided to just mess around with some free writing those two days prior to Nov 1st. So, I wrote what ended up being the first draft of De’vii’s part in chapter one.

Nov 1st came around and I just kept going on the new story. Fun fact: that other novel is still unfinished… Continue reading →

DREAM (Curtain Chasers: Book Three) has been published. It is the third and final novella in a gay paranormal romance trilogy. About 42k words long. You can read chapter one below. Be warned, explicitness involved.

Dream - Curtain Chasers Book 3Death is part of Clay’s job, but not generally part of his life. That changes when tragedy hits close to home. Now, he’s forced to start a hunt within his own town. And he has to do it without Jacob by his side.

But not even Clay’s partner, Danica, has faced this danger before, a danger no one has ever discovered how to kill. When an old enemy appears demanding Clay’s help and the police complicate matters, the power of the otherworld invades the town.

With Jacob out of reach and choices limited, Clay watches all his dreams of their future morph into one long sleepless nightmare.

Warning: This novella features fettered spirits, unclaimed dreams and a proposal gone awry.

CHAPTER ONE

Clay had wanted to go with yellow gold and black platinum, but he hadn’t liked the way any of them looked. Plus, he’d decided that gold signified a wedding band, so he’d ended up buying a black platinum ring with the tiniest edges of silver. Simple, with just a hint of humor in the beveled edges.

He’d thought about adding a quote on the inside of the ring, but lacked the creativity to come up with anything romantic, yet not cheesy. All of Brianna’s suggestions had been over-wrought clichés that had made Clay cringe and finally scrap the idea altogether.

Except, now that he held the ring between thumb and forefinger, he wondered if he should have engraved something like the date they’d met or their full names. Too late now. Besides, Jacob probably wouldn’t care. Clay hoped, at any rate. Continue reading →

GRAVE (Curtain Chasers: Book Two) has been published. It is the second novella in a gay paranormal romance trilogy. About 37k words long. Read Chapter One Here!

*ALLEY (Curtain Chasers Book One) will be on sale through June 15th-June 17th for only $0.99.*

Grave - Curtain Chasers Book 2A few random facts about this novella:

1) I did not make up any of the strangely named born-agains mentioned in this story. I am, however, tweaking them to my benefit so they are more in line with my system.

2) There are less chapters, but more words, in Grave than in Alley.

3) I created a short glossary to include in Grave and only added it to Alley afterwards.

4) In my original outline, one of the small twists at the end went the opposite direction. I found that it would have made the ending a little more drawn-out and clunky so I scrapped that idea. Can’t say more without giving it away.

5) The character of Ella was created for a different novel. In that story she only exists via emails. I wanted to keep her that way for Grave, but, you know, things happen and that wouldn’t have made sense. Plus, I think she was annoyed at not having a real voice.

6) Grave has my favorite cover in the trilogy.

The sea-foam cavalry’s beauty is only surpassed by its cruelty.

Imeline and Quinn have grown up together, bonding over their shared love of watching the sea-foam cavalry pass in the night on its way to defend the roads outside their town. After years of flirting and teasing, the two finally sneak down to the beach to see the cavalry arrive upon the shore.

But when the sea-foam cavalry thunders out of the ocean, its protective nature devolves into something more sinister. Imeline is left to wonder if her love has been misplaced because now neither her life nor Quinn’s will ever be the same and their budding romance seems a hopeless endeavor.

This collection also includes the short stories My Sister’s Shoes, Under the Black Stars, But Flesh Among the Storm, Bed of Starlight and Every Wine-Flavored Exhale.

M/F Short Story 7500 words
Amazon

This is a republication of a story originally published here on my site. There is no change to the story except that it is no longer available for free.

In the steaming jungle…

When a handsome, muscular werecat enters her territory, Trek is tempted to just chase him away. He is young, after all, and her heat is almost upon her. The last thing she needs is a tomcat too inexperienced to satisfy the demanding heat cycle of a mature queen.

But Reach is a werecat on a mission. He’s determined to prove himself a virile partner, earn Trek’s respect and maybe, if he can truly impress her, gain a litter and become a tomcat she seeks out for future heats.

This is an erotic short story of about 7500 words.

ALLEY – Curtain Chasers: Book One has been published. It is the first novella in a gay fantasy romance trilogy. About 28k words long.

Alley - Curtain Chasers Book 1

A few random facts about this novella:

1) This trilogy was meant to be only a couple thousand word short story. Yes, that worked. Obviously.

2) The story takes place in the same town as Kiss. Mouth. Red. (M/M) and Aura of Happiness, Aura of Love (M/F).

3) One of the characters was actually first created for an entirely different story. But I can’t tell you about it because it’s still in progress :P

4) Once created, I didn’t change a single character name, not even by one letter, which is incredibly strange for me.

5) There are only so many ways to describe two walls and a dumpster. Because of the unchanging scenery in this novella I have decided that it will be a long time before I write a story from the POV of someone imprisoned again.

6) My favorite character is Clay Devlin.

SIREN SONG has been published. A 40k word novella; gay fantasy romance.

Amazon

Small excerpts can be found here.

Is it only the facade of desire driving him back?

The Nest of the northern sirens is a jagged island filled with the bones of their victims and the egg sacs of their young. Strands of their hair decorate the rocks while scales gather in the tide pools and human skulls clack in the wind.

No one goes there willingly. No one leaves there alive.

With his father wasting away to disease, Rikel risks the seductive songs of the sirens, hoping he can fool them long enough to survive. Like every other man and woman before him, he is enthralled, powerless and full of lust for the siren who sings for him.

Yet, the siren–Caarafk–doesn’t seem like the others after he makes a choice that leaves Rikel both confused and song sick. Need burns in his veins and desire simmers through his nerves, making temptation stick like barnacles to his mind and body. As Rikel’s resistance to the siren’s thrall weakens, tragedy strikes, leading Rikel straight into Caarafk’s arms in a song-sick haze, unsure whether or not he’s making a deadly mistake.

Warning: This novella features a siren who hates his voice, magically induced dubious consent and a whole lot of man on man water action.

Clean Sweep has been published, a 5400 word Christmas story with a M/M pair in a contemporary setting.

Clean Sweep came from a Christmas prompt. When I first thought up the silly soot monster idea, I’d envisioned it as something humorous and sweet, but my mind seemed to be in serious mode so almost immediately I had Trey’s motivation to decorate become something a little less than cheery. Which made me sad. So I had to spend some time fixing his problem because I’m generally a sucker for happily ever afters.

The title is supposed to be a nod to both the soot monster’s physical destruction and the need for Trey and Kevin to do some serious cleaning up of the mess they’ve made of their relationship.

This is the last Sunday story I’m publishing this year and while not all of them have been the most amazing, stupendous work in the world, I’ve had a lot of fun and have been pretty satisfied with everything I’ve accomplished. When I set out in February to publish a short piece every week, I honestly worried that my goal would fall by the wayside because, you know…life.

Instead, I feel as if I’ve written, edited and learned more this year despite (or maybe because of) my promise to myself that I’m just having fun and I’m not allowed to constantly second guess or throw my work out simply because it might not be up to some impossibly high standard set by some random person on the interwebs. Putting my work out there on a consistent, constant schedule has actually been freeing, surprisingly. It’s relaxed me. Made me care less about what might or might not get said about any specific story and care more about focusing on the next project because that’s where I’m happiest.

It’s been an interesting year.

Next year might even be more so because I’ve decided to change things up a little. Instead of publishing a story every week on my website all year, I’m going to only be publishing the first Sunday of every month from now on. Nothing serialized because that would be far too long to wait for the next piece. I’m doing this so I can concentrate on my longer stories in order to hopefully build a bit of a backlist of available work. I don’t have specific monthly/weekly goals, but my plan is to publish ten novellas/novels over the course of the next year. Wish me luck!

I know it seems as if I’ve been on a M/M kick for the past couple of months. I got caught up trying to even things out since I spent so much time earlier this year working on M/F pieces. I promise I’m still writing M/F. Speaking of which…

Sunday, Jan 4th: New Year, Old Loves (fantasy, short story, M/F) – Sometimes a letter means exactly what it says. Sometimes you have to know a person well enough to read between the lines.
