Edited May 12th: Bed of Starlight has been removed. You can find it in the collection Nothing But Seaweed & Other Stories coming May 29th, 2015.

Bed of Starlight has just been published, a fantasy short story of about 1700 words with an M/F pairing.

I texted my sister a while back, asking her to “give me a magical item.” She wrote back “magical ladder” and thus I wrote this story on that prompt. It’s probably obvious in the story or at least it would be once you read this.

Next Saturday, June 14th: An Indomitable Fire (fantasy, short story, m/f) – An unquenchable burn within their nerves.

This next story will feature the two characters, Bradd and Cerci, from Thawing Out and Water Play. Also, I’ll be publishing on Saturday instead of Sunday because I won’t be able to publish on Sunday.

Edited May 12th, 2015: Under the Black Stars has been removed. You can find it in the collection Nothing But Seaweed & Other Stories coming May 29th, 2015.

Under the Black Stars has been published. It is a short story of about 3200 words with a sort of M/F pairing.

I wrote this story a few years ago for a specific call. I wanted to make it more erotic, but that would have been against the mag’s guidelines. Instead, I culled the story down to make the word count and didn’t write everything exactly how I would have.

(Which is an argument against writing to calls/mags. Writing to market is a good skill to cultivate, but it does have its downsides when it comes to potentially ruining what a story would/should have been.)

Stumbled across it a few months ago and decided to give it a little uplift. Went through and did some re-writing, no longer feeling I couldn’t have as strong of an erotic element.

It’s not exactly romantic as many of my other stories are, but I don’t think the original idea really leaned toward anything seriously romantic.

Next Sunday, June 8th: Bed of Starlight (fantasy, short story, m/f) – Their love transcends space.

Edited May 12th, 2015: Nothing But Seaweed has been removed. You can find it in the collection Nothing But Seaweed & Other Stories coming May 29th, 2015.

Nothing But Seaweed has been published, a fantasy short story of about 3400 words featuring a M/F pair.

This particular story actually sat for a long time with only the WIP title at the top: Seafoam Cavalry. No notes, no characters, not even a first line. I would open the document every once in a while and fumble through a sentence or two. Then I’d usually delete it and move to something else. Then, for another long period of time I had a paragraph sitting there that was supposed to help start the story and only served to stagnate it even more.

The biggest problem was that I was trying to write the story in a more here-and-now style and voice that was losing the majesty of the idea. I didn’t want to get into the gritty details. I didn’t want to explain away everything. I just wanted to evoke a particular set of emotions.

When I realized that, I was finally able to get this story written.

Next Sunday, June 1st: Under the Black Stars (fantasy, short story, m/f) – They spend their deaths reaping the evil in their hearts.

Short Story (Approx. 5400)

Neveah hesitated, her sopping hair held in one hand, her drenched dress scrunched up in the other and her chest heaving from her breakneck run through the woods. The humidity sat heavy in her lungs as the last trickling of a summer rain pattered in the leaves above her head and dripped into the mud with tiny plunks. The ripples bounced off each other like her thoughts, keeping her focused on that mud and what it contained.

Or rather, who it contained.

Short Story (Approx. 3800)

It’d been almost a month since Samouru had officially joined the crew of the Boundless. Almost a month since Lianal had first experienced his tats roiling under his skin, vibrating with combined desire as he’d pressed into Samouru on an old mattress in a second-rate tavern. Samouru, while not the most skilled lover Lianal had ever been with, had been enthusiastic, overly responsive when Lianal had traced the kraken that encircled the left-hand side of Samouru’s lower torso.

Just the reaction of their conjurer tattoos would have been enough for Lianal to go back, seeking more. But…

Short Story (Approx. 2100)

So, the first thing you need to know about luminants is that while they aren’t as hard as their cousins, the incands, or nearly as reflective as the radiscents, they are still much harder and brighter than human flesh. These are problems, but not unsolvable ones.

A decent pair of tinted glasses or goggles will usually keep the reflections at a nominal level. Most people living in this six-sunned plane usually own a pair or two already so you’re probably already set in that department.

As for the hardness…well, I’ll get to that.

Short Story (Approx. 5600)

“We don’t craft love spells. Not even temporary or weak ones.”

Dean paused in his browsing, plucking up one of the pamphlets to pretend to read as he listened in on the conversation occurring on the other side of the shelf.

“You spell flowers with love crap all the time,” snapped a voice. Male. Slight rasp from cigarettes that would only get worse over the years. And when his voice rose at the end of the sentence there was a distinct whine.

Mini (Approx. 1300)

He would come at seven forty-five in the morning. Practically like clockwork. Always dressed for work. Always looking so…fuckable.

The guy was tall. Gangly, not willowy. Wary eyes, the color of fresh grass on a bright spring morning. He looked about mid-twenties. Maybe younger, but I doubted. Older, if he aged well.

Short Story (Approx. 4000)

Lianal noted when the kid showed up. Stepped through the threshold of the tavern like a wide-eyed child experiencing the pitching of a ship for the first time. He even swayed slightly.

The boy dodged nimbly to the side, letting a few others come in from the street. Because Lianal was watching for it, he saw the boy swallow, saw him get a rein on his timidness and steady his jaw as he searched the crowded room. And when the boy’s eyes caught on the Captain, something shifted in his demeanor.

Ignoring the worry settling in the back of his mind about his disruption to their potentially sacred, rocky island, Rikel pulled free his knife and started gather hair of different colors. A million shades of turquoise blended in the dark, so he picked random strands and lopped them off.

They crinkled dryly in his fist. Not like the strands he’d gripped on the siren in the sea. Hers had been soft and supple.

“That won’t help you,” came a melodious voice behind him. “They’re too old. Too dead.”

Rikel dropped both hair and knife, sucking in a breath as he fought for control over his body’s reaction. His penis had become hard at the first word, leaking by the end of the sentence. Unable to resist the call of that voice, Rikel turned, bracing one hand on the hair-covered rock in front of him as he got his first look at the new siren.

The light splayed across the man’s upper torso and face. His coloring leaned more towards green than blue, like dark algae with flecks of the sea flickering through as the waves heaved underneath it. A splash of speckled dark blue, a hint of violet at its core, looked as if it’d been tossed against the siren’s right temple, a few escaping droplets reaching as far as the bottom of his right cheek.

His hair held the same variegated colors that all sirens seemed to possess. This one’s hair ranged from a tanish sand-mimicking shade to almost black. A thick section had been braided down his right side, the tail of it tied with tiny fish bones.

Around his neck he wore a necklace made of thick black mussel shells and when he moved, they clicked against one another. Loud enough that with the last of his conscious thoughts that didn’t have anything to do with wanting and lusting Rikel wondered how the man had managed to sneak up on him.

“So you aren’t asexual,” whispered the siren, cocking his head slightly, his long hair sticking wetly to his biceps and curling around his shoulders. His tail flicked out of the water behind him, creating a small splash in the pool of seawater, the ripples heading towards the channel that cut through the Nest.

Rikel started forward before the siren had finished speaking, coaxed by that gentle whisper. He jerked to a stop a few paces away and almost managed a step backwards as the sounds faded from his ears.

The siren smiled. “And I haven’t even sung to you yet.”
