DEAD SHIP CHANTY
Emmi Lawrence

There sailed the seas a maddened thing, called a ship of dreams

brought forth to life, by timeless strife,

to begin its reign through the Serene

On a current of its making, The Narwhal grew in fame,

its power vast, its nets it cast

to brandish magic before it waned

With riches bulked within her holds, and Xanick at her helm,

she sought a port, the hidden sort,

to unload spoils that overwhelmed

Then one day long The Narwhal fought, a battle none could win

Broken in half, its decks collapsed,

while within its bowels the great beast grinned

And the current of The Narwhal, lodged beneath the arch,

too white to see, too tight to free,

yet across the mast the gryphons march

This is a teaser song for the novel Lost Isle: The Ocean’s Aviary I. This is the fuller version of the song mentioned in the novel that talks of the myth of Captain Xanick and the current he was able to control.

Lost Isle is available for Pre-order on Amazon here!

Can you smell the fresh cut grass
caught to your bare soles
from fast climbing berry hills
chasing long-legged foals

Can you hear their haughty chuffs
ears set flicking round
as they catch our cheery calls
and come trotting down

Can you feel their braided manes
with azalea ties
color to their cocoa hair
worn and proudly prized

Can you see the lightning bugs
flashing round their hide
shining courage in our path
as forward fast we ride

Can you taste the equine dreams
in flavors freshly spiced
with textures rough and tempting
a fleeting paradise

I wrote you a poem of rhythm and rhyme

I wrote you a poem of rhythm and rhyme

A small little piece filled with capers and crimes

I fed you red herrings and snippets of clues

Plus suspects most foul I whittled to few

You read every word and thought that you knew

The murder committed, the how of it too

You played along nicely, your guesswork divine

And though I tricked you, you had a great time

You have the thirst
though not the power
You claim the courage
Yet waste your hours

You have a dream
But not the will
You live a life
Yet aren’t fulfilled

You have tomorrow
but lost today
You see the goal
But not the way

You find your voice
When no one hears
You face your faults
But not your fears

You’ll wake too late
To live your dream
If all your time
Slips through the seams

So take this day
Shift out of park
And through the years
You’ll make your mark

There was this moment, over a decade ago, where I went from ‘someone who wanted to write’ to ‘someone who writes.’

We talk a lot about things we want to do, things we’re going to do, but so few of us actually get to doing them. And every so often, even if we’ve conquered these moments in the past, we still need reminding to stop talking and start doing. Reminded me of that awesome Shel Silverstein poem. Hopefully I can post it here without getting into trouble:

All the Woulda-Coulda-Shouldas
Layin’ in the sun,
Talkin’ bout the things
They woulda-coulda-shoulda done…
But those Woulda-Coulda-Shouldas
All ran away and hid
From one little did.

Oh, delectable nectar
poured forth from the gods
of mechanical interest
on laminate mods

You eliminate languid
pain and frustration
and manipulate outlook
for the day’s estimation

As linoleum creaking
I move to dispense
that recovery method
for last night’s unrest

In supplication I come
my knees bending deep
while declarations intoned
devotions most steep

I administer liquid
my cup overfilled
that invisible tugging
for now to be quelled

My anxiety wafting
far from the night’s storm
Our reality shaking
I conquer the morn

The addiction is real :)

Is this the same as when rock stars sing about drugs? XD

Thunder carved
And lightning born
Steel sharp
With perfect form

Oceans part
The waters shorn
Wild heart
Gives chase to storms

~~~
What rage he feigned, to hold his reign
Feats of glory, swollen stories
So legends claim a perfect name
~~~

At the base of my spine
I trap a shiver
As the glint in your eyes
no longer glitters

On the curve of my cheek
the tears turn silver
For the want of your touch
you don’t deliver

~~~
Though damp lines down his face are creeping
I see a strength in his gentle weeping
A steady heart, his head high keeping
~~~

She’s starlit pure and angel kissed
Where checkered halls in time persist
Her pearl bloom in earthly hearts
Tears fervent men of sense apart

He watched the wretched

He watched the wretched
Through a dirty pane of glass
Thinking himself blessed
Above the lower streets of crass

He thought his insight
Beyond their moaning plights of pain
Some heraldry of light
Rather than wishful grasps for fame

No boots of leather
Within those alleys black did stride
Only stormy weather
Could he see while locked inside

Gifts of gold and silver
he did bless with a scrawled line
an altruistic giver
who never met those he defined

That day a cleansing rain
exposed missed truth, the unseen whole
Dirt spots upon the pane
Could never mar such lovely souls

In between the busy days

In between the busy days

of catching trains and bills to pay

of looming deadlines kept at bay

by flurried habits come to stay

that drag us from our youth most gay

and teach us numbing, awful ways

to cope, to handle lives of grey

that never should have been okay

 ~

In between those busy days

your call, your voice flies me away

from deadlines, habits must obeyed

to lightened moments lit by rays

of soulful joy that makes me say

you always lead my thoughts astray

for when you call, the greyness fades

and life transcends beyond okay

Footsteps echoed on that path

Footsteps echoed on that path
and strident voices screamed,
yet when I crossed beneath the eaves
not all was as it seemed.

For empty was the entrance
and the corridor beyond.
All that moved within that gloom
were opinions right or wrong.

They flew on wings of torrid air
and cried their thoughts aloft,
a cacophony of scorching sound
and winners missing oft.

I listened to the arguments
debates in endless rounds
circling within that hall
no solutions in those sounds.

Temptation grew within my breast
to join the deafening heights
becoming one with all that air,
a soldier for those fights.

Then came a tread upon the walk,
another just like me
coming to investigate
that loud cacophony.

She stood within the doorway
looking up within that gloom,
then glanced at me with little care
before she left the room.

I followed in explicit wonder
that the shouts she did not feed
and found her kneeling in the garden
tearing out the weeds.

For what is better, I don’t know,
but I did know which I liked
for the noisy heated air inside
did not change the real fight.

Each note, rising, falling, out of tune

Each note, rising, falling, out of tune

underneath the brightening moon

Those words, joyful, fading, as sleep comes

that wakeful fight that can’t be won

Each breath, sighing, trying, to stay strong

yet quickly slipping far beyond

Moonbeams, softly, sweetly, touch her head

and into dreams she falls instead
